Loudoun Rescue takes first place at VAVRS Competition
Five members of the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad, located
on Catoctin Circle in Leesburg, won first place in the Virginia Association
of Volunteer Rescue Squads’ State Emergency Medical Technician
Competition. The Virginia state EMT champions for 2006 include team
captain Marie Powell, team coach Denise Alt, and EMTs Michelle Beatty,
Dave Beatty and Jim Cromer. Approximately 30 EMT teams from throughout
Virginia competed in the state competition held September 28 –
29 in Virginia Beach. This is the second year in a row that team members
from Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad have taken the first-place
spot in the state competition.
The rescue scenario for the winning team was that of a lady who slipped
on a rock while mountain-climbing, impaling her eye on a branch, and
also suffering from an open leg fracture, a fractured jaw, and an injury
to her shoulder. The team members were judged on their response to the
“emergency” and the timeliness of their response in addressing
the victim’s injuries.
Team members from Loudoun Volunteer Rescue dedicated their first-place
win to Trula Peach, long-time squad member and current president of
the squad’s Auxiliary. The local state champions will have an
opportunity to compete in the International Rescue and Emergency Care
Association’s national and international EMT competition in 2007.
